How to Set Up Your SMART Boardâ„¢ Interactive Whiteboard and Projector

First check to see that you have your cables and a computer to connect the Board and projector. Any PC computer with Windows 98 or higher or a MACOS X will work. SMART NotebookTM software also works with Linux. Also check to see if it has the SMART Notebook software on it. Here are some icons to look for:

Cables needed:

VGA cable (goes to projector)

Power cable to projector

USB cable for SMART Board interactive whiteboard

Where do these cables go?

Step 1:

Make sure the power cable is running from the projector to an outlet.

Step 2:

Plug the VGA cable into the projector (it will most likely be a blue outlet that says 'computer in'), and then plug the other end into the back of the computer that is also blue and says 'computer out'.

Step 3:

Take the USB cable and plug the small end in to the cable on the bottom right hand side of the SMART Board interactive whiteboard. Then plug the other long flat end into the computer.

Now you will want to start to turn things on.

  • First turn on your projector, you should begin to see a blue light.
  • Next you can turn on your computer.
  • Once the computer begins to start you will see the lights on the pen tray of the SMART Board interactive whiteboard light up.
  • The light on the right hand side of the SMART Board interactive whiteboard will start out red, but will turn green when it is ready.

Now check to see that the Notebook software is installed on the computer you are using.

Look for this icon in the bottom right corner of the Windows Navigation Bar or the docking station on a MAC.
Look for this icon on the Desktop.

If you do not see these icons, installing the software is easy. You can click on the link below and choose which download works for your system or install the software that came on a CD with the computer.www2.smarttech.com

Now it is time to center the projector!

If the projector is ceiling mounted you can skip this next step.

The projector will need to be lined up with the SMART Board interactive whiteboard to make the most centered image on the Board as possible.

Once the projector is centered, try to align the image with the SMART Board interactive whiteboard by adjusting the Board and the legs on the projector. If you are using a laptop and are only seeing a blue light, press the "fn" button And either "F8" or "F4" to get the image to project on the Board.

One last step and you should be ready to go!

Orienting/Aligning the Board:

On your pen tray look for 2 buttons, 1 is the Keyboard Button the other is the Right Mouse Click Button located beside each other.

Older Pen trays have 2 buttons on the right:

Newer models have the larger buttons located in the middle in front of the eraser:

You will need to hold down both keys at the same time. This will launch a screen that looks like this:

You will now orient/ align the board.

Press with a pen from the pen tray or your finger on the center of the diamond. Once you move your finger or pen off you will see that it has moved to the next spot to press. Press on all diamonds until screen is refreshed.
